The
sheep are called Christ’s sheep. They are his first by creation (he made them)
and second by redemption. Earlier, the Lord had said, “I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (Jn. 10:11). If the flock
were ours, whether as ministers or elders or even as parents (thinking of our
children of whom we are overseers), we could do with it as we wished or as we
thought best. But if it is Christ’s, we must do as he wishes, recognizing our
responsibility to him.
