The God of the Gospel of John is not a silent God. He has spoken to his people through the OT Scriptures (e.g., John 5:45–47; cf. 9:29), and finally and supremely in Jesus. The Scripture as God’s Word cannot be nullified (John 10:35), and in Jesus the OT promise that God would teach his people has become a reality (John 6:45). God has now conveyed his final and definitive word through his Son, who has explained the Father (John 1:18; 14:9). God has not only spoken, but also he has acted. In particular, God has demonstrated his love for the world in sending his Son for its salvation (John 3:16; 20:30–31). God sent the Son to save the world, not to condemn it (John 3:17), and hence the Son is God’s supreme gift to the world (John 4:10).
